Strontium chloride
Strontium chloride is a kind of inorganic salt and the most common strontium salt. Its aqueous solution is weakly acidic (due to the weak hydrolysis of Sr2 +). Similar to other strontium compounds, strontium chloride is red in flame, so it is used to make red fireworks. Its chemical properties are between barium chloride (more toxic) and calcium chloride
It is the precursor of other strontium compounds, such as strontium chromate. It is used as a corrosion inhibitor for aluminum. Chromate ion is similar to sulfate ion in precipitation reaction
Strontium chloride is occasionally used as a red colorant for fireworks. A small amount of strontium chloride is also added in glass making and metallurgy. The radioisotope strontium-89 is used to treat bone cancer, usually in the form of strontium chloride. Seawater aquariums need small amounts of strontium chloride to provide exoskeletons for some plankton. It can also be used in pyrotechnics, flux of electrolyzing metal sodium and catalyst of organic synthesis.
The toxicity of strontium chloride is less than that of barium chloride. Avoid dust contact with eyes and mouth, and avoid inhalation.
